Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) construction arm has been selected for a turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for AMAALA project in Saudi Arabia.
Under the EPC agreement with the sponsors, French electricity utility EDF and UAE's clean energy powerhouse Masdar, L&T Construction will be responsible for developing systems related to renewable energy generation and utilities.
The consortium of Masdar and EDF signed a concession agreement for the utility project with AMAALA's developers.
Spanning more than 4,155km2, AMAALA ultra-luxury destination is located within the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Natural Reserve in the Red Sea region.
It will feature 25 hotels, 900 residences, and various wellness and leisure facilities upon completion.
The contract awarded to L&T is part of the country's efforts to integrate renewable energy generation and utilities into the destination.
The project will have an off-grid renewable energy system, including a solar photovoltaic plant of about 250MWp and a battery energy storage system exceeding 700MWh.
Power systems will also include biofuel-powered internal combustion engines, high voltage transmission lines, medium voltage distribution networks and three gas insulated substations.
The water systems component of the project entails constructing a 37 million litres per day (MLD) seawater reverse osmosis plant, six MLD sewage treatment plants, and associated marine works.
Larsen & Toubro whole-time director & senior executive vice-president of utilities Madhava Das said in a stock exchange filing: “The award of this prestigious contract stands testimony to the synergistic strength of diverse offerings of L&T Construction in providing innovative solutions to customers keen on sustainable, clean and reliable electricity and water systems.”
Last month, L&T Construction’s Buildings & Factories and Transportation Infrastructure business segment was contracted to construct an international airport in Andhra Pradesh, India.
