Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction's Transportation Infrastructure Business has secured a contract for the construction of a cable-stayed bridge across the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India.

The contract, awarded by the Public Works Roads Department of Assam, involves the construction of a 12.21km bridge.

The bridge is intended to directly connect the towns of Palashbari and Sualkuchi in the region.

The project is part of the Assam government's transport infrastructure plan, which includes the construction of two bridges over the Brahmaputra River.

The other bridge connects Panbazar to North Guwahati.

This plan was announced by the finance minister of Assam during the region's budget release for 2017-2018.

It is aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, supporting the growth of the Guwahati Metropolitan Area, and facilitating the expansion of the city to the North Bank.

Construction of the Palashbari Sualkuchi Cable-Stayed Bridge is expected to boost the local economy, specifically benefiting Sualkuchi.

Sualkuchi is said to be one of the world's largest weaving centres and producers of golden silk called muga.

Additionally, the bridge will provide a direct connection to the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

The project includes a 3.6km cable-stayed bridge section, alongside 5.61km on the Palashbari side, and 3km on the Sualkuchi side, which also comprises wetland approach viaducts.

Completion of the bridge is scheduled to take place within 48 months.

L&T is currently undertaking the Dhubri Phulbari Bridge Project for the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation.
