The phased construction of the airport is hoped to double its passenger capacity over time.

November 06 2023

Larsen & Toubro Construction’s (L&T) Buildings & Factories and Transportation Infrastructure business segments have been contracted to construct an international airport in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh, India.

The businesses were awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction order by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport for this development.

Initially, Bhogapuram International Airport will have the capacity to handle six million passengers per annum.

Construction of the airport will be carried out in phases, with plans to double that capacity in the future.

The scope of this development project covers cut and fill works; terminal works with airport systems; construction of an air traffic control tower; roads, landscapes; utilities, and other supporting infrastructure.

The airfield expansion works include a 3,800m-long south runway, apron, taxiways, ground lighting, and fuel hydrant works, among others.

L&T is currently developing airports in several other major Indian cities, including Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Navi Mumbai.

L&T did not specify the exact value of this order, although it categorises 'Large' orders between Rs25bn ($300m) and Rs50bn.

Last month, L&T's Energy Hydrocarbon business secured a letter of intent for a new onshore project in the Middle East.
