Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner (LNS) has secured a construction and installation contract for the Snøhvit Future project in Norway.
Awarded by Equinor, on behalf of the Snøhvit partners, the contract is worth about Nkr1.5bn ($142.58m).
The project is aimed at enhancing Norway's role as a sustainable gas supplier with minimal greenhouse gas emissions for Europe.
The Snøhvit Future project is backed by partners including Petoro, TotalEnergies, Neptune Energy, and Wintershall Dea.
LNS, with its headquarters in Andøy, Nordland county, will be responsible for constructing a tunnel and landfall for a power cable stretching from Hyggevatn to Melkøya.
This infrastructure will enable the transmission of electricity from Statnett’s transformer substation at Hyggevatn to the Hammerfest LNG facility on Melkøya.
Commencement of construction is pending the acquisition of the necessary approvals and permits.
Equinor chief procurement officer Mette Ottøy said: “This is LNS’s first assignment for Equinor. They submitted the best bid overall, and we look forward to working with a new supplier in the region.
“LNS also has a number of subsuppliers, including Viggo Eriksen in Hammerfest, Alta Anlegg and Hörmann Norway in Tromsø.”
Multiconsult has secured the engineering contract for the tasks to be undertaken by LNS.
The project will be managed from the Tromsø office, with participation from offices ranging from Alta in the north to Fredrikstad in the south.
Multiconsult will also provide support during the execution phase.
Nexans is set to supply the power cable from Rognan and Halden, while Aibel has landed the contract, which encompasses all modification work on Melkøya.
Additionally, Northern Norway-based Consto has been selected for construction and installation work on Melkøya.
The project is expected to create about 1,700 person-years (FTEs) of employment in Northern Norway during the construction phase and ensure energy delivery to Europe up to 2050.
In addition, it will extend the operational lifespan of the Hammerfest LNG plant beyond 2030, preserving the 900 FTEs associated with the plant's operations in the region.
