A new medical and dental centre at Leuchars Station in Fife, Scotland, has topped out, marking a major milestone in the facility's construction.

Once operational, the facility is expected to enhance healthcare services for British Army personnel and their families.

Managed by the UK's Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and constructed by Graham Building North, a construction company, the £22m ($27.5m) project aims to replace the existing medical centre built in 1936.

The new centre will provide comprehensive services, including physical rehabilitation, mental health support, and general practitioner (GP) and dental services, catering to approximately 3,700 military personnel and their dependents.

As Leuchars Station evolves into the army's Scottish hub, the facility has been designed with the anticipated increase in personnel in mind.

Sustainability has been a key consideration in the centre's design, incorporating thermal efficiency, solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and four electric vehicle charging stations.

The choice of building materials is aimed to minimise environmental impact, positioning the centre as a model for future Ministry of Defence medical and dental facilities in terms of sustainable construction.

The building is now at its full height, and the focus is shifting to the interior fit-out. Upon completion, the transition from the old to the new centre will occur, followed by the demolition of the outdated facility by Graham.

DIO project manager Shaun Purdy said: “Reaching this milestone, with completion of the structure, means it’s easy for both the medical staff and other personnel at Leuchars to see the scale of this new facility and how well-suited it will be for their needs. Our focus now moves to the interior of the building as we look forward to the completion of the building in the coming months.”

Graham Building North regional director Chris MacLeod said: “Our team have been working diligently to deliver this medical and dental facility for our longstanding client, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. With the frame completed, we can now visualise this sustainable, state-of-the-art building and the services it will provide for the military personnel and their families at Leuchars and in the wider region.”

Earlier this month, DIO awarded a £65m contract to Galliford Try for the construction of single living accommodation at Royal Air Force Digby in Lincolnshire, England.
