Sustainable building solutions provider Lafarge Canada has announced the shift from traditional cement to OneCem production at its St-Constant Cement Plant in Quebec, Canada.

OneCem, a limestone blended cement, requires less clinker than traditional Portland cement.

This move is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by approximately 60,000 tonnes in 2024, which is said to be equivalent to emissions from more than 16,000 passenger vehicles.

Lafarge East Canada president and CEO David Redfern said: “The transition to OneCem production at our St-Constant plant indicates Lafarge Canada's nonstop commitment to driving positive change within our construction industry.

“Our teams have been engaged in reducing our products’ environmental impact by embracing greener practices and materials.”

The latest transition to OneCem aligns with the company's broader decarbonisation strategy, expanding the availability of eco-friendly products for its customers.

By offering OneCem exclusively for general use, Lafarge Canada aims to help its customers lower their carbon footprints.

Its St-Constant Plant specialises in sustainable cement production.

The plant’s efforts have included initiatives such as circularity via ECOcycle, and partnerships with CarbiCrete and Patio Drummond to support zero-carbon concrete production.

Lafarge East Canada Cement vice-president Andrew Stewart said: “Our team at St-Constant is proud to be taking actions towards sustainability.

“With this transition, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also aligning with our organisation's drive to be a leader for sustainable construction throughout Eastern Canada.”

Last December, Lafarge Canada announced a partnership with CarbiCrete, a climate tech company that focuses on eco-friendly construction solutions and waste transformation.

The partnership is aimed at developing new products for customers.
