Network Rail has awarded British construction engineering company J Murphy & Sons the main construction contract for the Cambridge South station development project in Cambridge, England, UK.
The contract carries a value of approximately £93.4m.
This new two-storey, four-platform station will be built on the West Anglia Main railway line next to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
The scope of the project includes the construction of ticket vending machines; lifts for step-free access to all platforms; accessible toilets, baby change facilities, a waiting area and space for retail/catering; access for pedestrians and cyclists from both sides of the railway with a capacity for 1,000 cycle parking spaces; as well as modification to nearby roads and crossings to facilitate easy access to the station.
Murphy, together with Network Rail’s other integrated delivery partners, Alstom, and the South Rail Systems Alliance (SRSA), will upgrade the train infrastructure to support this new station.
Improvement works will include the installation of two new track loops to house the four-platform station; Shepreth branch junction enhancements; upgradation to the railway on the southern approach to the Cambridge station; infrastructure for overhead line electrification and a substation; updating of current signalling equipment; closure of two private level crossings, and installation of other access points.
Enabling works have already begun, with the construction of the worksite compound, the installation of overhead line masts, and building of the platform's front walls underway.
Work on the station will now proceed until completion, which is expected in 2025.

“Murphy has made significant progress over recent months completing the enabling works, commenced installation of all four platforms, station building piling and undertaken all groundworks to facilitate the track being realigned during a blockade in December 2023.
“We have forged a strong working relationship with Network Rail and our other delivery partners, SRSA and Alstom on this major infrastructure project and look forward to completing this station for the people of Cambridge.”
