The Indian Union government is inviting prequalification applications from interested companies for the development of the 'All India Institute of Medical Sciences' building (AIIMS) in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India.

The proposed AIIMS Madurai site at Thoppur, which is 13.5km from Madurai, is easily accessible via national motorways and regional road routes.

The project is supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which has provided a loan to the Union government towards the project's cost.

The government intends to use a portion of the proceeds for payments under the contract for the construction of buildings and site development for the AIIMS.

The revised cost estimate of establishing the premier medical institute has grown higher than the original cost of Rs12.64bn ($152.06m) to Rs19.78bn, reported Deccan Herald.

The duration of the project is expected to be 33 months with an added defect liability period after, which is 24 months from the date of completion.

The development will be carried out in two phases on the proposed site area of roughly 900,304m². Excluding the site development area, the built-up area measures approximately 2,000,851m².

Phase I of the project will include construction work, and the first phase of the Academic Block, Admin block, Hostels, Outpatient department, and Infectious Diseases block with 150 beds. This first phase is expected to take 18 months to complete.

The remaining works will be carried out under Phase II over a period of 14 months.

Construction is expected to begin by December this year.
