Harrison & Burrowes Bridge Constructors has commenced work on the superstructure replacement project on the New York City (NYC) Thruway (I-87) in Ulster County in New York, US.

The project, valued at $23.7m, is set to modernise the three-span bridge that opened in 1995 and spans over the Wallkill River and State Route 213.

This bridge, measuring approximately 360ft in length, carries 54,000 vehicles per day.

The project is expected to progress through three stages, with completion anticipated by late 2026.

New York's governor Kathy Hochul said: “New York State is making significant investments in essential transportation routes that link local communities and serve as catalysts for regional economies.

“This project is one of many ongoing capital projects on the Thruway system, each translating into millions of toll dollars reinvested to maintain a dependable superhighway that serves commuters, commercial truckers and visitors.”

The first phase focuses on median crossover preparations for construction in 2025 and concrete repairs on the current abutments and piers.

The second phase, set to commence in 2025, will involve the dismantling of the northbound bridge superstructure and the erection of a new northbound bridge.

This includes the replacement of bearings, structural steel, the bridge deck, and the approaches.

The third phase, starting in 2026, will mirror these activities for the southbound bridge.

The new bridge girders and other steel components will be metallised to prevent rust and corrosion.

Furthermore, the project includes environmental protection measures to safeguard the Wallkill River.

Sedimentation and erosion controls will be implemented to prevent discharge into the river, and upon completion, soil stabilisation techniques will be employed.
