Work has commenced on an infrastructure improvement project on Interstate-87 (I-87) in Ulster and Greene counties, New York, US.

The $21.3m project aims to enhance a 15.5-mile stretch of I-87, spanning from milepost 93.8 to milepost 109.3.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said: “New York continues to make historic investments in our infrastructure to enhance the safety, durability and lifespan of our transportation system.

“This is one of dozens of projects on the Thruway and state roadways that will make critical improvements to our system for generations to come.”

The development involves repairs and resurfacing efforts between exits 19 and 20 on the highway. This section is claimed to be used by approximately 40,000 motorists daily, in both directions.

The improvement works will include full and partial-depth pavement repairs using asphalt, and shoulder reconstruction in specific areas.

Less affected areas will undergo partial-depth repairs, where the existing asphalt overlay will be removed and replaced with a new two-course asphalt overlay.

This approach is intended to prolong the pavement's service life.

Following the pavement repairs, a mill and inlay will be carried out at the parking area at milepost 103.1, the fuel areas at the Malden Service Area, and the on and off ramps at exit 20.

Callanan Industries has been contracted for the project after a competitive bidding process. The project is anticipated to be finished in late 2024.

The Thruway Authority's 2024 Budget allocates $451m to support its Capital Program, which plans to invest $2.4bn in capital projects over the next five years.

This investment is set to cover work on nearly half of the motorway's more than 2,800 lane miles and approximately 90 of its 817 bridges.

Last week, work commenced on a $47m construction project to renew a segment of State Route 17 in Tioga County in New York.
