Hyndburn Borough Council secures approval for new sports complex

The entirety of the project will be carried out under the UK Leisure Framework.

December 04 2023

Hyndburn Borough Council has received approval for its planning application to construct a new advanced leisure and sports complex on Wilsons Playing Fields in Clayton-le-Moors, England, UK.

The success follows a recommendation for review by the country's secretary of state.

The facility will have a four-lane, 25m swimming pool, sauna, and steam room, as well as a fitness suite, group exercise studio, a café, and specialised changing amenities for teams using different outdoor sports facilities.

To be delivered in collaboration with Sport England, the new development is valued at £12m.

Hyndburn Council has funded the project as part of the borough’s leisure transformation strategy.

Hyndburn Borough Council leader and councillor Marlene Haworth said: “The development of the new leisure and sports centre is part of our ongoing commitment to provide everyone in our community with the leisure and social opportunities they need to prosper.

“The modern building will complement the existing outdoor sports facilities creating opportunities for the whole community to enjoy a wide variety of activities both as participants and as spectators.

“This investment will provide a community facility that drives health and happiness for many years to come.”

The building will be designed to maximise energy efficiency alongside creating a modern activity and sports hub tailored to the community’s requirements.

Solar panels, air-source heat pumps, and advanced low and zero-carbon technologies at the property will all contribute to the council’s goal of reaching net zero by 2030.

The entire project will be carried out under the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure and directed by Alliance Leisure, in collaboration with Hyndburn Borough Council and Hyndburn Leisure.

Construction works are set to commence early next year and are scheduled to be completed in early 2025.
