Development partner Hub South East has been selected to deliver two new primary schools at Craighall and Blindwells in East Lothian, Scotland, UK.

The projects are estimated to cost a total of £49.6m ($60.6m).

Hub South East, in collaboration with East Lothian Council's in-house project team, previously managed the design and development phase.

Hub South East projects director Andrew Thornton said: “The designs for these exciting new schools have been developed using Passivhaus principles, so pupils and staff will not only benefit from modern new learning spaces, the buildings themselves will be energy efficient and will assist our client in meeting progressive Scottish Government environmental targets.”

The company is now tasked with overseeing the construction of the schools.

In addition, builder Balfour Beatty has been commissioned as the project’s main contractor.

East Lothian Council Education and Children’s and Family Services cabinet member and councillor Fiona Dugdale said: “This is the first time we have worked with Balfour Beatty on a school new-build.

“They join an experienced and professional team of council officers, project managers and architects with a proven track record of delivering excellent learning spaces.”

jmarchitects has crafted the learning spaces for the new schools.

Construction is due to commence next month, with completion expected in early 2025.

Each school will be designed to accommodate up to 420 students and will feature an early learning and childcare centre with 100 places for children aged two to five years.

Until the schools’ completion, children from the Craighall and Blindwells catchment areas will go to Stoneyhill and Cockenzie Primary Schools, respectively.

Hub South East and jmarchitects previously worked on the Wallyford Learning Campus for East Lothian Council.
