Trafford Council and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) have entered a joint venture deal with Far East Consortium (FEC) to develop 750 homes on the former headquarters of Greater Manchester Police in Stretford, UK.  

The developers were chosen after a competitive procurement process initiated by Trafford Council and GMCA in 2022.  

This follows the relocation of Greater Manchester Police to the new facility in Central Park, Newton Heath, in 2012, leaving the Stretford site available for redevelopment. 

The latest partnership aims to transform the 9.5-acre site into a community with 25% affordable housing. 

This aligns with the strategy of both the council and GMCA to provide affordable, low carbon housing options and revitalise brownfield land. 

The Civic Quarter Area Action Plan, recently adopted by Trafford Council for Stretford, encompasses this redevelopment scheme.  

The plan outlines the construction of residential units as well as a hotel, leisure facilities, retail spaces, offices, and community amenities.  

These developments are designed to create a sustainable environment with public transport connectivity to Manchester City Centre. 

FEC Manchester managing director Gavin Taylor said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be able to formalise our agreement with the Council and GMCA so that we can get underway with delivering the new vision for this regionally important project.  

“We recognise that the former police station site is in a high-profile location and the local community want to see it brought back into use for the good of the people living here. We intend to do just that by leveraging our significant regeneration expertise to deliver a place that creates spaces for people to live, work and come together.” 

In 2023, a joint venture between FEC and Manchester City Council led to proposed planning applications for the Red Bank neighbourhood development in Manchester.
