Holcim has laid its first clinker-free concrete pavement in North America, marking a key step in its efforts to promote sustainable construction.  

Collaborating with Stoneway Concrete, the project has led to a reduction in carbon emissions, boasting a 74.7% decrease compared to standard concrete.  

This underscores Holcim's commitment to developing solutions that support decarbonisation without sacrificing performance. 

Holcim North America regional head Toufic Tabbara said: “Our net-zero goals are ambitious, and to get there, we need to continuously push the boundaries to decarbonise building at scale. 

“Through cutting-edge research and development, our team of engineers have created a virtually clinker-free cement. This innovation represents a substantial reduction in carbon emissions and a major step in sustainable building.” 

The 30m³ slab-on-grade concrete pad, designed to endure heavy truck traffic, was poured at Holcim’s Seattle plant in May this year.

By substituting clinker with a slag activator, Holcim's method reduced the energy required, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.  

This project is expected to pave the way for future collaborations with customers across the Pacific Northwest region, with the expectation of early commercial pours within the remainder of the year.  

Holcim subsidiary Lafarge Cement Sales and Logistics vice-president Cory Cannon said: “This product exemplifies our ability to swiftly introduce eco-friendly building solutions, and we’re pleased with the positive reception from our customers, showing the industry's readiness to embrace these advancements.” 

Holcim acquired Mark Desmedt, a Belgian company specialising in recycling construction demolition materials, earlier this month. 

This move is in line with Holcim’s goal to recycle ten million tonnes of construction demolition materials annually.
