Henry Brothers Construction and Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust have commenced the construction of Belper health centre.

A turf-cutting event was held to mark the start of works on the site.

The facility, which will be a £15m ($19.81m) hub for community health services, is being constructed on the site of the former Belper Clinic and is expected to take 66 weeks to complete.

It is being delivered through the Pagabo Major Works Framework.

The construction team also includes Capita as the project manager, Eastwood Consulting Engineers for civil and structural engineering, and EP Consulting for mechanical and electrical engineering.

Designed by architects Race Cottam Associates, the facility will feature 15 consulting rooms, six treatment rooms, and other facilities.

It will house all outpatient and clinical services currently provided at Babington Hospital.

Services to be offered at the new health hub will include community nursing, midwifery clinics, and a variety of specialist treatments such as podiatry, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy.

The centre will also provide a continence advisory service, wound care, and phlebotomy among other services.

Henry Brothers Construction design and planning director John Sowter said: “We are very pleased to have started work on site, marking a key milestone in the mission to provide new, community health services in Belper.

“It was an honour to host members of the Trust who have been pivotal in developing this scheme to an official turf-cutting ceremony and we are looking forward to delivering these new NHS facilities for the community of Belper.”

Construction of the centre will incorporate sustainable practices, including the use of photo-voltaic panels, local and recycled materials, and timber from certified sources.

The building is being constructed to BREEAM excellent standards.

In 2023, Henry Brothers obtained a £30m contract to build the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
