Turner, along with design-build partners Gensler and TEF has broken ground on the Terminal 3 West Modernisation project at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), US.

The $2.6bn initiative involves an expansion and renovation of Terminal 3, including the addition of a 200,000ft² extension and a 650,000ft² refurbishment.

A new six-storey building is also part of the plan, set to accommodate airline lounges and office space for operations.

Turner vice-president and general manager Nino Adamo said: “This project is an opportunity to showcase our expertise in delivering large-scale, complex projects that align with our values of innovation, quality, and sustainability.

“Our relationship with SFO has been built on trust and collaboration, and we are excited to continue this journey together as we transform Terminal 3 West into a state-of-the-art facility.”

Turner has initiated the construction of temporary corridors to ensure passenger safety around the construction area, adopting a 'one and done' approach.

This is to simplify the process and avoid multiple relocations of the pathways during the project timeline.

The temporary corridors, spanning 1,000ft on the west and 400ft on the east, were prefabricated in 11 modules at an adjacent air cargo yard.

This strategy was also designed to minimise disruptions for travellers.

Upon completion, Terminal 3 West will have expanded retail and dining options and improved security measures.

The redesign will offer a new check-in area, enhanced baggage systems, and intuitive wayfinding for passengers.

The modernisation also incorporates the installation of advanced technology systems to optimise airport operations and passenger flow.

Targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification, the project includes energy-efficient systems, water-saving fixtures, and materials sourced from responsible suppliers.

The expansion is scheduled to open in late 2027, with the completion of the eastern side of Terminal 3 expected in 2029.

Earlier this year, Turner Construction was selected to build a hyperscale data centre campus at the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville, US.
