Greystar has commenced the construction of its first apartment development, called Ophelia, in Pittsburgh, US.

The community, which is in partnership with ECHO Realty, will feature 231 rental homes, with 35 units allocated for the city's affordable housing scheme.

Greystar Development senior director George Hayward said: “Greystar is excited to make its entry into Pittsburgh in partnership with ECHO Realty.

“Together we are transforming a legacy retail strip centre into a unique mixed-use project, signifying the dramatic evolution of the East Liberty and Shadyside neighbourhoods. We expect this to be the first of many Greystar development projects in the city.”

Ophelia's residential options will range from studios to two-bedroom apartments.

The interior design intends to pay homage to the local Victorian architecture while infusing modern elements reminiscent of the Gilded Age.

The amenity list includes a fitness centre with an outdoor workout area, a co-working space, a billiards and bar area in the club room, a swimming pool, and outdoor grilling and lawn spaces.

These facilities are designed to enhance the living experience and foster a sense of community among residents.

Expected to commence preleasing in late 2025, Ophelia is set to be completed in early 2026.

A retail component named The Meridian, managed by ECHO Realty, will include 44,000ft² of space for restaurants and retail establishments.

The tenants include Shake Shack and Barnes & Noble, alongside a 36,000ft² Market District grocery store.

Meridian's retail offerings and Greystar's residential units are expected to create a mixed-use development.

Located at the intersection of Penn Avenue and Shady Avenue, The Meridian is in proximity to Bakery Square and the new East Liberty Bus Rapid Transit station.

In July this year, Greystar partnered with Wire Development to initiate the construction of Elan Crown Point, another mixed-use community, in Ocoee, Florida, US.
