Granite has been awarded a contract, valued at approximately $16m, by the City of Salinas to improve traffic flow between residential areas and Highway 101 in California, US.

The project aims to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety near a primary school and will involve widening East Boronda Road into a four-lane roadway.

The project includes the construction of a multilane roundabout at the McKinnon Street intersection, bioretention facilities, buffered bike lanes, bus pullouts, and sidewalks.

Additionally, the project will see the installation of Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant access ramps, storm drain lines, sanitary sewer lines, street lighting, landscaping, and other improvements.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Brent Fogg said: “We are excited by the opportunity to participate in improving accessibility and traffic flow for the citizens of Salinas.

“As a local business, we understand the needs of our community and are committed to making a positive impact.”

Funding for this infrastructure upgrade comes from the City of Salinas and will be recorded in Granite’s second-quarter (Q2) committed and awarded projects.

Granite's Salinas Hot Plant is set to supply approximately 7,500 tonnes (t) of hot mix asphalt and 8,000t of recycled aggregate base for the project.

Moreover, the Handley Ranch Quarry, another Granite facility, will provide 18,000t of various aggregates necessary for the completion of the work.

Granite Construction Operations senior vice-president Brian Dowd said: “Located near Granite’s Salinas Recycled Aggregate and Hot Plant facility, the Boronda Road project aligns perfectly with our home market strategy.

“This project presents an ideal opportunity for us to respond to a longstanding community request and further develop our local market.”

The project is scheduled to commence in Q3 2024 and is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Last month, Granite secured a $25m contract from the City of Everett for the replacement of the Edgewater Creek Bridge in the US.
