Granite has secured a contract of nearly $88m from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in the US for improving a section of Ortega Highway State Route 74 (SR-74).

The project, to be funded by state and federal sources, aims to enhance safety and travel efficiency on the narrow two-lane mountainous highway. It will be included in the first-quarter committed and awarded projects of Granite.

The scope of the Ortega Highway SR-74 project encompasses the expansion of the shoulders and roadway facilitating the installation of rumble strips along the centerline and edge.

These enhancements are expected to provide a significant safety buffer for vehicles, addressing the current concerns of the narrow highway. Additionally, the project will resurface the highway, contributing to safer travel.

Granite's ongoing commitment to improving this stretch of highway is evident, as this project builds on the previous work conducted over the past few years.

The construction is set to begin in April 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by November 2026.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Bill Moore said: “We have been working closely with Caltrans on this highway for several years, and we are excited to continue this partnership.

“It aligns with our strategic goal of expanding our footprint in the Inland Empire of Southern California.”

Granite engages in diversified construction and construction materials services and is also a full-suite civil construction provider in the US.

The award of the Ortega Highway SR-74 project follows Granite's recent contract wins.

Last week, the company received a $71m contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers for rail yard expansion at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

In September last year, Granite was awarded another US contract valued at roughly $65m by the Utah Department of Transportation to commence the second phase of the State Road 30 Improvement Project in Logan, Utah.
