Construction company Granite has been awarded a contract for pavement rehabilitation work along Highway 162 in Mendocino County, California, US.

Awarded by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the contract is valued at approximately $36m.

The project aims to improve a 25-mile stretch of roadway that is the sole motorway connection to the Covelo-Round Valley area.

Caltrans District 1 project manager Katie Everett said: “This project will improve safety and result in a smoother drive for the travelling public.”

Granite will be responsible for the furnishing and placement of 150,000 tons of both conventional and rubberised hot mix asphalt to reconstruct the motorway's structural section.

The rubberised asphalt will incorporate recycled tyres to create a surface that is smooth, quiet, and safe for driving.

Additionally, all fine aggregate required for the project will be sourced from Granite's own Highway 175 Quarry.

The funding for this project is being sourced from national funds and the California Senate Bill, and it was accounted for in Granite's first-quarter committed and awarded projects.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Brent Fogg said: “In partnership with Caltrans District 1, our construction and materials teams are ready to deliver another exceptional pavement rehabilitation project for our community.

“We are thrilled to see continued investment from Caltrans to improve critical transportation infrastructure and we are proud to be a trusted partner. We are grateful to the community for their patience and attention to work zones during construction to keep everyone safe.”

The project is scheduled to commence next month and is expected to be completed by September 2025.

Earlier this month, Granite Construction won a contract for the retrofit of off-site infrastructure at Ontario International Airport’s east-end runway.
