Granite has been awarded an approximately $38m contract by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) for the Highway 101 Segment 4E South project.

The initiative involves adding peak-hour high-occupancy vehicle lanes and reconstructing all elements of the existing highway through southern Santa Barbara.

The funding for this project is sourced from Caltrans and local contributions and was included in Granite's second-quarter committed and awarded projects.

This marks the sixth Highway 101 mainline segment awarded to Granite under its Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) contract.

The collaborative team, comprising Granite, Caltrans, and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG), has been working together for more than five years to implement enhancements to Highway 101.

Completed segments in Carpinteria and Summerland and the segment south of Summerland is set for completion by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, multiple segments in Montecito are underway with an expected completion in 2026.

The Segment 4E South contract is designed to fully integrate into the ongoing Montecito segments, aiming to maximise synergies and improve overall project efficiency.

The project focuses on improving traffic flow, as well as sustainability.

Granite Regional Operations vice-president Larry Camilleri said: “This project is another significant step forward to relieving traffic congestion through this critical corridor.

“We are excited to work with Caltrans and SBCAG to deliver another important project for the community and travelling public.”

Approximately 13,000 tonnes (t) of materials removed from existing structures will be recycled into aggregate base.

The concrete for paving, amounting to about 11,800m³, will be produced from an onsite batch plant, utilising materials from Granite's nearby aggregate facilities totalling 19,000t.

Additionally, hot mix asphalt required for the project, around 12,850t, will be sourced from Granite's Gardner and Santa Paula Hot Plants.

The commencement of Segment 4E South is scheduled for September 2024, with completion targeted for October 2026.

This contract follows Granite's recent $27m agreement to widen shoulders and resurface a 19-mile stretch of State Route 33 in Kern County, California, last month.
