The contract options include W.3A, W.3B and W.4 for the Polychrome Area Improvements CM/GC project.

The US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has awarded construction options to Granite to continue construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) works in Denali National Park, Alaska.

The contract options are W.3A, W.3B and W.4 for the Polychrome Area Improvements CM/GC project.

The options carry a combined value of $24.5m and take the overall value of all the awarded options and modifications to $95.6m.

These awards provide for long-lead procurements, development of steel truss bridge, and construction engineering and fabrication of temporary works for a bridge launching system.

Preconstruction works commenced this January. According to the company, the overall contract is broken into Option W, Option X and Option Y.

In July, Granite secured the Option X for CM/GC project, valued at $51.5m.

Option Y, the final package, includes the delivery of miscellaneous materials, the bridge’s construction, the erection of back walls and approaches, and the installation of the thermosyphon system.

The design for Option Y is finished, and the construction contract negotiations are scheduled for November 2023.

Construction works slated for the next season cover the development of bridge abutments and a temporary launching system, with bridge development scheduled for the following season in 2025.

Granite Group project executive Todd Keller said: “Using the CM/GC process and working closely with the FHWA, its design team, and the National Park Service (NPS) during preconstruction allowed Granite to fully analyse risk, generate efficient work plans, develop a detailed schedule, and, importantly, package the work to reduce overall schedule duration and cost.

“The result of our preconstruction effort is a well-choreographed approach to maximise the work we construct during the next three seasons.”

The Polychrome Area Improvements project is located at the Pretty Rocks Landslide that crosses the Denali Park Road near its midpoint at Mile 45.4.

This project covers developing an approximately 475ft long single-span steel truss bridge to span the active landslide.

This project is anticipated to be completed by July 2026.
