Surrey County Council in the UK has awarded construction company GRAHAM a contract to deliver upgrades to the A320 road network, between Ottershaw and Chertsey.

This project is funded by a £41.8m ($52.8m) grant from Homes England's Housing Infrastructure Fund, supporting the Runnymede 2030 local plan.

The improvements will include widening and resurfacing the road, improving traffic capacity and flow through four key junctions and link sections, as well as signal installation at junction 11 for access to the M25 motorway.

In addition to road upgrades, the project will improve the area's drainage system and provide better facilities for walkers and cyclists, including new crossing points and wider foot and cycle paths, as well as improved access to public transport.

The enhancements are designed to make the route more reliable and support economic growth.

The construction programme is currently in the planning stages with GRAHAM.

This contract has been granted through the GEN 5 Southern Highways and Civils Framework, a civil engineering, highways, and transportation collaborative framework.

Enabling works are set to commence today (24 February), including site surveys, clearance, and building a works compound. The first-phase main construction is expected to start next month.

The entire scheme is anticipated to be completed by late 2026.

Surrey County Council Property, Waste and Infrastructure cabinet member Natalie Bramhall said: “Those who drive on the A320 regularly will appreciate how busy this road is and how vital these improvements are to residents and businesses along this key route.

“I am really pleased we have secured this contract with John Graham Construction, and we can begin to deliver this long-awaited scheme.”

GRAHAM project director Gareth McLaverty said: “We are delighted to be delivering this transformative scheme on behalf of Surrey County Council. The A320 North of Woking project is a vital infrastructure investment that will not only improve safety and traffic flow but also unlock thousands of much-needed new homes in the region.”

Earlier this month, GRAHAM was selected to lead the second stage of the Didcot and surrounding area major infrastructure scheme in the UK.
