GMI Construction Group has celebrated the topping-out ceremony of the new student accommodation scheme in Birmingham, UK.

This £24m project on Dogpool Lane is being constructed for student housing developer Alumno and financier Woh Hup.

Named Pershore Junction, the project is redeveloping a former brownfield site that was occupied by BT, providing housing for students attending the city’s universities and dental hospital.

It is expected to be finished for the 2024 academic year student admission.

Pershore Junction will feature room for 167 students via a combination of cluster beds, single-occupancy studio rooms, as well as a lobby and amenities that will benefit the Selly Park neighbourhood.

Furthermore, the project includes an upgraded retail space for the site’s original Post Office and newsagent, which has been moved nearby during construction.

The neighbourhood will benefit from an improved public space in front of the building with a poetry garden with seats and bike stands.

Birmingham-based architect Howells designed this project.

The design aspects of this new building will include brickwork and terracotta detailing, which will encompass local materials while generating an updated look for the site.

Alumno managing director David Campbell said: “Our development will improve the local area visually, provide an economic boost to local businesses, and deliver much-needed accommodation for Birmingham’s growing student population.

“As with all our developments, we have worked closely with the surrounding community and local authority to ensure the scheme enhances this vibrant area.”
