GMI Construction Group has secured a contract to construct a 400,000ft² warehousing and logistics hub in Birmingham, England, UK.

The 29-acre brownfield site in King’s Norton, which was home to former occupiers Pilkington Automotive and GKN Aerospace, will be transformed into the Urban 8 Logistics Park.

Developed by Tristan Capital Partners and Canmoor in collaboration with St Francis Group, the project is worth £32.9m.

This development expands both Tristan and Canmoor’s portfolio and is considered a significant investment in the Midlands market of the country.

St Francis Group, a regeneration specialist based in Henley, will serve as the development manager and is responsible for delivering the completed units.

In February 2021, Birmingham City Council approved full planning permission that led to the site's clearance for this multiunit industrial logistics development.

GMI Midlands' divisional managing director Gareth Jones said: “We are pleased to have been appointed principal contractor for this high-profile scheme, one that will support investment and create jobs by providing much-needed logistics and manufacturing space.”

The hub will encompass eight energy-efficient units ranging from 25,000ft² to 70,000ft².

The units will be designed to reach the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) ‘Excellent’ rating.

Each unit will utilise sustainable measures such as LED lighting, energy-saving infrastructure, and electric vehicle charging.

Together, these initiatives are expected to contribute to a 25% reduction in overall carbon dioxide emissions.

Construction is expected to be finished by the fourth quarter (Q4) of next year.
