Global Crossing Airlines Group (GlobalX) has entered an agreement with aviation facilities developer and operator Sheltair Aviation.

The agreement will fund and build a new aircraft maintenance facility at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (KFLL) in Florida, US.

GlobalX has plans to break ground on this facility in the fourth quarter of this year and to begin operation in the second quarter of 2025.

GlobalX chair and CEO Ed Wegel said: “This facility is vital to our growth and allows us to perform maintenance up to C checks on our growing Airbus fleet.

“Sheltair has extensive experience in the design, financing, and construction of hangar facilities and continually adds new facilities to their portfolio acting as construction program manager and working with a world-class design and construction team to develop large aircraft hangar facilities.”

The construction value of this facility is estimated at approximately $25m.

According to Wegel, this 69,650ft² facility will include a hangar, office, and shop amenities and will be equipped to house three A320 family aircraft or one A330-sized aircraft.

Sheltair COO Todd Anderson said: “This large-scale hangar project will also complement Sheltair’s existing award-winning FBO and hangar complex.

"Sheltair looks forward to completing this planned premium facility for GlobalX to enable them to have a state-of-the-art MRO facility at KFLL and support the rapid growth of their fleet.”

South-East Asia Construction Market Dynamics

Per GlobalData analysis, the South-East Asia construction industry in 2023 is dominated by Indonesia, though the country will see a slowdown compared to 2022 due to elevated building material prices, weak commercial property demand, high interest rates and a softening of external demand. The construction industry in the Philippines is estimated to register a AAGR of 7.2% between 2024 and 2027, supported by the government’s focus on the development of the country’s rail and road transport and energy infrastructure.
