Global Infrastructure to build storage facilities for SSEN Transmission

Global Infrastructure has already begun construction works on the Inverness facility at IABP.

SSEN Transmission has awarded a multi-million-pound contract to UK construction contractor Global Infrastructure to design and build storage warehouses.

The contractor will construct a pair of 7,500m² strategic facilities in the Claverhouse East Industrial Estate in Dundee and the Inverness Airport Business Park (IABP) in the Highlands.

The facilities are vital to support the continued growth and maintenance of the country’s energy network.

Global Infrastructure managing director David MacDonald said: “The new strategic warehouse facilities, which we will deliver in early 2025 will be vital to the build-out and maintenance of the electricity network as part of the government’s drive to net zero.

“The 7,500m² structures in Dundee and Inverness will incorporate heavy lifting facilities, bunded areas for oil filled plant, bespoke storage areas, office and welfare areas for staff and the latest electric vehicle charging points and photovoltaic installations.”

The company has already begun construction on the Inverness facility at IABP and will build a temporary compound.

Construction works in Dundee will commence in January next year. The total duration for the two projects is 62 weeks.

SSEN Transmission project manager John Baillie said: “The new sites will provide us with state-of-the-art facilities which will support us to effectively manage and maintain the high-voltage electricity transmission network, helping us drive towards delivering a network for net zero.

“It is an exciting time for SSEN Transmission as we continue to expand across the north of Scotland, building an electricity transmission network to help tackle the climate emergency by connecting and transporting Scotland’s vast renewable resources to where it is needed most.”

The metaverse is still in its early stages - first movers have the chance to become market leaders in the construction industry

The construction industry has large and complex sites to manage, strict project deadlines, hazardous working conditions, and tight profit margins. It is also under increasing pressure to improve its ESG credentials and digitalize. The three primary use cases for the metaverse in the construction industry are training, building information modeling (BIM) renders, and collaborative creation, though its adoption is still in its infancy.
