Bird Construction has secured a contract to oversee the final phase of the new Fredericton Justice Building in New Brunswick, Canada.

Construction of the new courthouse is being carried out in three phases.

Work on the final phase is expected to commence in the coming months, with completion anticipated by early 2025.

New Brunswick Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames said: “We are excited to announce the next phase of this project, which incorporates a different delivery model for our department.

“The construction management services will be an integral part of developing this project for the Fredericton area.”

The province's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, in partnership with the Department of Justice and Public Safety, initiated the construction of the new courthouse on King Street in December 2021.

The project, estimated at C$60m ($44.77m), will encompass a six-storey building spanning 110,000ft².

It will accommodate the New Brunswick Court of Appeal, the Court of King's Bench, and the Provincial Court across ten courtrooms.

It will also feature advanced video conferencing technology and improved security measures, including an enhanced screening area, a Sheriff's suite, and a secure holding area for in-custody court attendees.

Additional facilities within the new building will include a hearing room, judicial accommodations, victim services, legal aid, and more.

The project's first phase involved asphalt removal, excavation of old concrete foundations, installation of construction site fencing, and sidewalk hoarding on King Street.

The second phase comprised the installation of concrete foundations and the construction of the building's steel superstructure and suspended concrete slabs.

Both phases were completed in mid-2023.
