Eneco submits planning permission for green hydrogen plant in Rotterdam

The plant is aligned with Eneco's One Planet Plan.

Netherlands-based energy company Eneco has filed a planning application to build a green hydrogen production facility in the Europoort industrial area, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Eneco and Mitsubishi are collaborating on this project, the Eneco Electrolyzer, through the Eneco Diamond Hydrogen joint venture.

Construction of the plant is expected to allow Eneco to assist its industrial clients in making their processes and products more sustainable.

The facility is expected to have a capacity of 800MW and will be capable of producing up to 80 kilotons of hydrogen annually.

The production will depend on the quantity of available renewable energy and industry demand for green hydrogen.

It will use renewable energy from solar and wind farms to generate clean hydrogen for the industrial sector.

Strengthening the industrial client's sustainability aligns with Eneco’s One Planet Plan, which seeks to make Eneco and all its customers climate-neutral by 2035.

The Eneco Electrolyzer will be built near the Enecogen power plant in Europoort.

Eneco CEO As Tempelman said: “When direct electrification is not possible, green hydrogen is a good and sustainable alternative, both as a raw material and as a fuel. Investing in green hydrogen is an important part of our strategy and it pleases me that we can now take concrete steps towards this.”

With the submission of its planning application, Eneco expects to begin construction on the Eneco Electrolyzer within the next few years.

Construction work is anticipated to begin in 2026, and the hydrogen plant is set to be operational in 2029.
