A consortium comprising Eiffag has received a €358m contract to build a new bridge across the Rhine in Leverkusen, Germany.

Germany's motorway network operator Rhineland Branch of Autobahn has awarded the contract.

Eiffage noted that the optimised new configuration structure will replace the existing crossing and provide increased capacity while supporting efforts to improve the country’s quality of bridges.

Eiffage Métal's German subsidiary SEH is the lead contractor for the consortium, which includes Max Boegl, Plauen Stahl Technologie, Zwickauer Sonderstahlbau and Hochtief Infrastructure.

Under the contract, the consortium partners will build a 688m-long bridge that will be part of the A1 motorway between Leverkusen and Cologne.

SEH will demolish the existing steel structure, deliver 25% of the new metal structure production and assemble the new structure’s entire steelwork and cables.

Eiffage said the new bridge’s metal components, which represent more than 16,000t of steel, are to be manufactured in Germany. It will be delivered via the Rhine.

Work on the bridge is scheduled to start next month with delivery planned for late 2027.

Eiffag and its consortium partners were also selected to build an initial 2x4-lane bridge in Leverkusen. The project is planned for delivery next year.

The second bridge is planned to be built in parallel to the first structure.
