Egis, an infrastructure engineering consulting and operating company, has secured a contract to supervise the construction of two new electric high-speed rail (HSR) lines in Egypt.

Awarded by the domestic National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), the project is part of Egypt's overarching 2,000km rail network expansion.

It is being undertaken in collaboration with SYSTRA as part of a consortium.

NAT said: “We have full confidence in the collaboration of Egis and SYSTRA on the development of the high-speed rail line.

“This project is a transformative initiative for the country's vision and will profoundly enhance the quality of life for our citizens.”

The consortium's scope encompasses the project's Blue and Red Lines, totalling 1,325km and 39 stations.

It will be responsible for design coordination, project management, design review, and construction supervision services.

It says it aims to ensure the project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

The Blue Line will connect Cairo to Abo Simbel via Luxor and Aswan while the Red Line will link Safaga to Qena.

This rail network is designed to transport both passengers and freight.

Aligning with Egypt's 2030 vision, MISR2030, the HSR project is expected to support the country’s economic and social needs and enhance its transport connectivity on regional and international levels.

Egis Egypt country managing director Mohammad Ben Messaoud said: “We are honoured to contribute to the realisation of Egypt’s 2030 vision ‘MISR2030’ through our involvement in this high-speed rail project for the National Authority for Tunnels in addition to the various projects in Egypt we are supporting, across multiple disciplines.”

Egis has previously partnered with NAT for Cairo Metro Lines 2, 3, and 6, as well as the Alexandria Tram.

Last month, Egis acquired UK-based property and construction cost and project management consultancy Thomas & Adamson.
