Egis has secured a contract to serve as the lead consultant for the new metro line, named Abou Qir Metro, in Alexandria, Egypt.

The company will provide project implementation unit (PIU) assistance, contract management, and construction supervision consulting services.

The project is in collaboration with the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and Engineering Consultants Group.

It is intended to transform Alexandria’s diesel train service into an electric metro system, aimed at boosting energy efficiency and offering a sustainable mode of transport.

The Abou Qir Metro line, which will stretch about 22km from Abo Qir to Misr Station, will have a 15.5km elevated section and a 6km ground-level section, following the existing railway line.

Along the elevated section, 14 new metro stations will be constructed, including stations such as Abu Qir, El Maamoura, Montazah, and Victoria.

The ground-level section will feature six additional stations.

Prioritising sustainability and minimal passenger disruption, the project will reutilise the right-of-way of the existing Misr Station - Abu Qir railway line.

The scope of Egis' services encompasses PIU support, where the company will aid the NAT in managing the project to ensure all phases are executed according to plan.

In the realm of contract management, Egis will supervise the contractual aspects of the project to facilitate seamless cooperation among all parties and ensure compliance with contractual commitments.

Additionally, Egis will provide on-site supervision of the construction activities through its construction supervision service, ensuring the project adheres to quality standards and is delivered on time.

Egis Egypt country managing director Mohamed Ben Messaoud said: “It is an honour to be the trusted partner of NAT on so many of Egypt’s transportation needs.

“With our brilliant local and international experts working on multiple projects, we ensure we meet the country’s vision for sustainable travel and smart urban development to the highest standards. We are committed to supporting our Egyptian customers on their path to Vision 2030.”

This announcement comes after Egis received a contract to supervise the construction of two new electric high-speed rail lines in the country earlier this month.
