Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has commenced construction on a new aluminium recycling plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The facility is claimed to be the largest aluminium recycling plant in the country.
The plant has an annual production capacity of 170,000 tonnes and is being constructed adjacent to EGA's current smelter factory in Al Taweelah.
The facility will produce low-carbon, high-quality aluminium billets from post-consumer aluminium scrap, including old window frames and pre-consumer aluminium waste from extrusion operations.
The plant will export its low-carbon metal to domestic and global markets under the brand name RevivAL.
Construction is anticipated to be finished in three years.
The company noted that the majority of aluminium scrap generated in the country is currently processed outside the UAE.
Upon completion, the facility is expected to contribute to EGA’s aim to become the UAE's leading domestic processor of aluminium scrap.
EGA CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban said: “Aluminium recycling is key to our metal achieving its enormous potential to contribute to decarbonisation while improving global living standards. This makes recycling the biggest global growth opportunity for our industry, and for EGA.
“Our construction of a major aluminium recycling plant will provide low-carbon product options for our local and global customers while contributing to the national Operation 300bn industrial growth strategy.”
According to market estimates cited by EGA, worldwide demand for recycled aluminium will increase from 27 million tonnes per year in 2022 to 57 million tonnes in 2040.
Recycled aluminium is also estimated to contribute to more than 60% of global aluminium supply growth between now and 2030 and approximately 70% of supply growth between 2030 and 2040.
