Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened two bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road intersection improvement project.  

The first bridge, a two-lane structure, spans 601m and has a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.  

It facilitates eastward traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road, continuing north towards Al Qusais and Deira.  

The second bridge, also two lanes, extends 664m and supports the free flow of traffic by eliminating conflicts for vehicles coming from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road heading south towards Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port.  

This bridge is also designed to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. 

The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed road intersection improvement project involves the construction of four bridges in total, totalling 2,874m in length with a capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.  

The project represents a link between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, enhancing traffic flow across Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street.  

RTA executive director, board chair, and director general Mattar Al Tayer said: “The project was undertaken in response to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president, prime minister of the UAE [United Arab Emirates], Ruler of Dubai calling for completing the development of road infrastructure to keep pace with the ongoing development of Dubai and accommodate the needs of urban development and population growth.”  

All project works are scheduled for completion soon. The final bridge, which will connect the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street with Al Asayel Street, will open by next month.

This bridge will span 943m, feature two lanes in each direction, and is designed to accommodate 8,000 vehicles per hour.  

The project also includes road works spanning 7km, which involve upgrades to surface intersections on the service road parallel to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. 

It also comprises enhancements to streetlights, traffic signals and systems, stormwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems. 

Earlier this month, the RTA announced the opening of two domestic bridges at Zaa’beel and Al Quoz 1 on Al Khail Road.
