Dubai, a city within the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has introduced a new 3D printing certification and conformity mark system for factories and entities in the country's construction industry.

Claimed to be the first of its kind in the world, the system has been designed to optimise procedures and enhance the quality of concrete mixes used in factories within the UAE city.

Dubai Municipality's director general Dawoud Al Hajri said: “The certification and conformity mark system for factories and entities operating in the field of 3D printing for construction has been comprehensively established in alignment with Dubai Municipality’s proactive vision.

“This system embraces international best practices to provide exceptional services to both individuals and the community, thereby enhancing Dubai's global reputation and aligning with Dubai Municipality’s strategic objectives outlined in Dubai's 2030 Plan.”

Al Hajri added: “The new system is anticipated to make significant strides in the efforts to streamline practices and procedures for 3D printing and enhance the quality of concrete mixes used in licensed factories.”

Dubai Central Laboratory, along with its engineers, technicians, specialists, and experts, will oversee the new system’s management and quality control.

The laboratory and team will be responsible for product inspection, testing, and issuance of conformity certificates as per the laboratory's approved technical principles and controls.

The facility has already created certification and quality marking systems for ready-mix concrete, precast concrete, cement, and chemical additives to improve both quality and consumer standards.

According to the municipality, using 3D printing means construction projects can achieve lower chances of errors and less wastage of materials and natural resources, including water, aggregate, and cement.
