The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed two flood control projects in the country's municipality of Bauang, La Union.

These structures aim to mitigate the risk of flooding in flood-prone communities across Barangays Pudoc, Nagrebcan, and Parian Este.

Region I director Ronnel Tan reported to DPWH Secretary Manual Bonoan that an 800m flood control structure has been constructed.

The project also involved the building of concrete revetments and rigid floodwalls to prevent the Bauang river from overflowing into residential and agricultural areas.

The first of the two projects consists of two sections and spans 484m, with a cost of 48.9m pesos ($0.867m).

Section one extends from Barangay Pudoc to Barangay Parian Este and section two connects Barangay Parian Este to Barangay Nagrebcan.

The second project added another 316m-long revetment between the two sections of the first project, with a total cost of 30.8m pesos.

Tan said: “Various measures are being undertaken by DPWH to protect vulnerable communities.

“These flood control structures can withstand the onslaught of river waters during tropical storms, safeguard the local populace, mitigate inundation risks in the barangays and curtail the adverse impacts of floods on vital infrastructures and livelihoods.”

In addition, the DPWH is focusing on improving road and bridge infrastructure to enhance connectivity in Ipil and Kabasalan, part of the Zamboanga Sibugay communities.

The rehabilitation of the 69.8m Kabasalan Bridge along the Lanao-Pagadian-Zamboanga City Road ensures the safety of motorists.

The road widening and bridge rehabilitation projects were carried out with budgets of 28m pesos and 10m pesos, respectively.
