The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the completion of the La Union Convention Center project in San Fernando City.

The three-storey multipurpose building, located in the barangay Sevilla, spans a total floor area of 2,000m².

Constructed for 280m pesos ($5.01m), the centre has been handed over to the local government of San Fernando City.

It features an architectural design influenced by La Union’s surfing destination and can host up to 1,500 individuals for various events, exhibits, and government programmes.

DPWH Region I director Ronnel Tan conveyed the project's completion to the DPWH's secretary Manuel Bonoan, highlighting its potential to enhance the sociocultural facilities of the area.

Bonoan said: “The La Union Convention Center is anticipated to not only serve as a hub for various gatherings but also contribute to the region’s economic growth by attracting out-of-town visitors to attend conventions, meetings, seminars, and trade shows.”

“This project is a testament to the ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ programme by providing state-of-the-art infrastructure for the benefit of the general public.”

The DPWH has also completed a flood mitigation structure in Barangay Central, Baganga, Davao Oriental.

Citing a report from DPWH Regional Office 11 director Juby Cordon, Bonoan said the structure is a 220-lineal-metre concrete revetment wall with a paved road built on a steel sheet pile foundation.

The project also involved the installation of 1.72-lineal-kilometre concrete-lined canals, 696 hexapods to protect foundations, and 11 solar LED streetlights.

The 67.5m pesos project aims to protect the coastal community from water-related hazards.

The development began in May 2023 and was completed in January 2024.

It was funded by the 2023 General Appropriations Act and executed by the DPWH Davao Oriental First District Engineering Office.

Earlier this week, the DPWH completed an infrastructure project in the country’s capital, Manila.

The development project aims to improve connectivity between two agricultural barangays in Polangui, Albay, Philippines.
