The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the completion of the Bicos Bridge reconstruction project in Rizal, Nueva Ecija.

The project is aimed at enhancing motorist safety at the Junction Pinagpanaan-Rizal-Pantabangan Road.  

The development, valued at 58.8m pesos ($1.05m), included a 202m road approach and abutment to safeguard the bridge foundation. 

DPWH Regional Office III director Roseller Tolentino said: “The bridge was damaged due to its old age and tension from overloaded vehicles.” 

In addition, the DPWH Nueva Ecija 1st District Engineering Office has finalised the construction of an 80m pesos flood control protection wall along the Talavera River in Llanera, Nueva Ecija.  

The 537m structure has been designed to shield properties and farmlands in Barangay Caridad Norte from flood damage. 

Both initiatives were financed through the 2023 General Appropriations Act, reflecting the government's commitment to infrastructure development in the country.  

The DPWH has also completed rehabilitation and upgrade works on a section of Puerto Princesa South Road in Palawan. 

With an investment of 34.1m pesos, the improvements cover a 966.5m stretch in Barangay Luzviminda, enhancing the travel experience along the coastline.  

The upgraded road section is expected to improve mobility and boost tourism in Puerto Princesa City. 

With the project now finished, the upgrade offers residents and visitors smoother and visually appealing travel along the coastline. 

DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Office director Gerald Pacanan said: “This road improvement project is expected to benefit the local economy in the area by fostering improved access to key destinations and supporting local tourism initiatives.” 

These projects come after the DPWH revealed the completion of the La Union Convention Center project in San Fernando City last week.
