The Phillippines' Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is advancing the construction of bridges in the domestic Tawi-Tawi province, part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The projects have been funded by the Asian Development Bank under the Improving Growth Corridors in Mindanao Road Sector Project.

The Nalil-Sikkiat bridge number 1 and Malassa Lupa Pula bridge number 3 are steadily progressing, with the former set to connect Bongao Island to Sanga-Sanga Island.

The first 541m bridge, contracted to China Wuyi for 893m pesos ($15.25m), is 64% complete and set for completion by July 2025.

Completed works comprise pile caps, back walls, wing walls for abutment B, and more.

Meanwhile, current work includes rebar installation, drilling for pier 9, and sidewalk construction at abutment B, among others.

Meanwhile, the 681m Malassa Lupa Pula bridge number 3, awarded to the consortium of V.T. Lao Construction and China Wuyi for 1.25bn pesos, is 32.9% complete with over half of the 99 bored piles finished.

It is expected to be completed by September 2025 and will link Sanga-Sanga to mainland Tawi-Tawi.

These bridges, located in the south-western tip of the Sulu archipelago, are expected to ease congestion on Bongao Island and enhance regional connectivity, as well as foster economic growth.

DPWH senior undersecretary Emil Sadain said: “By enhancing local and regional market connectivity, these bridges are expected to attract more investors, stimulate economic activities, and improve the quality of life for the people of Tawi-Tawi.”

Additionally, the Tongsinah-Paniongan Bridge, a 569m structure connecting Pababag Island to Sanga-Sanga Island, has begun civil works.

Awarded to the joint venture of China Wuyi and Vicente T. Lao, this bridge will provide a direct route between Bongao and future growth centres.
