College of the Rockies (COTR) has announced the start of construction of a secondary access road to the college's main campus in British Columbia's Rocky Mountains, Canada.

The scope of construction work will include the expansion of approximately 800m of the road from the east side of the college’s main campus to 30th Avenue North.

COTR Facilities director Allan Knibbs said: “This road extension has been on the college’s capital plan for a very long time, and we are grateful to the province for providing the funding to move forward with construction this year.

“Creating a secondary access road to the campus makes the campus even more walkable and addresses safety concerns should we ever be faced with an emergency.”

The new exit and entry point will enable the college to organise larger community activities on campus, which were previously limited due to potential traffic congestion on the present single-access route.

The new road will be built on the college's land, with any impacted bike and walking paths to be repaired throughout the process.

Lamps, CCTV, crosswalks, and speed bumps will be installed once the main works are completed to ensure further safety measures.

Knibbs added: “We have worked closely with the city’s engineering department and appreciate the city’s support of this project. We were pleased that it fits into the city’s official community plan.

“With 200 students now living on campus, the college has become another vibrant hub for residents in our community.”
