Architecture company Overland Partners has announced the start of construction on the Zion National Park Discovery Center project in East Zion, Utah, US.

During a ceremony, the company presented renderings of the Zion National Park Discovery Centre.

Positioned on 19 privately owned and donated acres close to the park’s east entrance, the site safeguards the area from upcoming commercial development growth.

Island Planning will transform the site with an eco-sensitive landscape plan.

The Permanent Community Impact Fund Board of the Department of Workforce Services issued a $15m bond to the local service district to fund the Discovery Centre.

Besides this, the Utah Department of Transportation will invest $10m to build adequate road infrastructure.

North American entity Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds will provide play environments that promote children’s growth using natural experiences.

The Zion National Park Discovery Centre is set as a model for developing a connection between people and the land in future generations through immersive learning opportunities, with a commitment to preserving the beauty of the landscape.

This 22,000ft² Discovery Centre will provide free, hands-on educational activities for visitors, assisting them to learn about the region’s history, natural environment, geology, and agricultural past while creating a strong sense of connection to the place.

Overland Partners principal architect James Lancaster said: “Our shared commitment to creating an authentic entry experience leading to Zion National Park is evident in the meticulous attention to preserving, conserving, and seamlessly integrating structures into the landscape.

“We aimed to design a place that sits lightly on the land, celebrating the iconic natural beauty of Zion.”

The building will be developed from cross-laminated and heavy timber, with an aim to source all Forest Steward Council (FSC) certified wood.
