Stantec, a global design and engineering company, has announced that construction is underway at the Bull Run filtration facility in Portland, Oregon, US.

The company is providing engineering services during the facility's construction phase, which commenced after Portland City Council approved the project's construction contract.

The project is set to bolster the resilience of the local water system, mitigate potential risks, and enhance protection for consumers.

The facility, along with its associated pipelines, will enable the city to comply with regulations that mandate the removal of cryptosporidium from Bull Run's drinking water supply.

Additionally, the project will strengthen the water system's resilience against fires, landslides, and other extreme events exacerbated by climate change.

Set to be operational by 2027, the facility will have a capacity of 135 million gallons per day to accommodate future drinking water demands.

Since 2019, Stantec has worked alongside Carollo Engineers and other companies to provide design services to the Portland Water Bureau for this facility.

MWH Constructors and Kiewit form the joint venture (JV) responsible for constructing the facility.

Stantec's role extends beyond construction assistance; encompassing design quality management, collaboration with construction manager/general contractor, geotechnical site investigation, operations support, support during commissioning, and project management for the filtration facility's design.

In this endeavour, Stantec has dedicated 23% of its design budget to involve minority-owned, women-owned, and emerging small businesses.

The completion of this facility is critical to meet the set deadline for filtered water service as mandated by a compliance agreement with the Oregon Health Authority.

Earlier this month, Stantec reported a 16.8% rise in net revenue, reaching $1.5bn for the second quarter of 2024.
