Construction progresses on Ogdensburg Airport project

The development is being funded via the federal Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.

Construction works are progressing on Ogdensburg International Airport in New York, US, to transform it into a regional transportation hub.

The $21.5m renovation project is intended to bring in more visitors and promote economic growth across the state.

Projected to generate 195 jobs in the process, the project involves a comprehensive refurbishment of the terminal building into a multipurpose facility that better serves both air carriers and passengers.

Construction at Ogdensburg International Airport follows the US Department of Transportation’s announcement to support port enhancement projects under the federal Port Infrastructure Development Program.

Recently, the Port of Ogdensburg received more than $5.1m for main dock terminal expansion while making port improvements to alleviate choke spots and increase the size and number of vessels that may dock concurrently.

This project, which has received an $18m grant from the $230m Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, will broaden the check-in, ticketing, and baggage drop-off areas at the airport.

It will also involve the construction of a new canopy across the kerbside drop-off/pick-up area and the installation of a new passenger information display system.

Additional works include building a new multipurpose space to accommodate community gatherings, conferences, business meetings, and other public events.

New York governor Kathy Hochul said: “Thanks to our Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Initiative, the Ogdensburg International Airport will get the improvements it needs to become a true, 21st-century travel destination that will attract new visitors and businesses to the North Country [of New York].”

Ogdensburg International Airport’s terminal, built in 1980, received up to 26,921 passengers a year before Covid-19 travel restrictions were implemented.

Construction work on the airport is scheduled to be finished by early 2025.
