Construction has commenced on the Sullivan County International Airport modernisation project in the US state of New York.
The initiative is aimed at transforming the airport into a gateway for the Catskill region.
The project received $18.5m in funding from the state governor’s (Kathy Hochul) $230m Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.
This investment was first announced by Hochul in September 2022 and is aimed at revitalising nine upstate airports and adapting them for the 21st century.
The Sullivan County International Airport project in the Catskill Mountains will see the construction of a new 15,000ft² energy-efficient terminal, replacing the current 55-year-old terminal.
Hochul said: “Airports are the front doors to our upstate communities and vital economic engines for the region.
“This project will provide the Catskills with the state-of-the-art airport it deserves and greet thousands of visitors per year as they explore the region.”
The new terminal will have an all-electric heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system with high-efficiency heat pumps and geothermal wells, natural lighting, and a pilot’s lounge, among other amenities.
Last week, work commenced on a $47m construction project to renew a segment of State Route 17 in Tioga County in the US state.
