The Cavally River bridge construction, an infrastructure project connecting Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia in West Africa, has officially commenced.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) handed over the site during a ceremony at the Prollo border.

This event marks the beginning of the physical works.

SCEGC and AIM Consult are responsible for the project. The contractor has committed to adhering to the 24-month timeline for project completion.

The project aligns with ECOWAS's Vision 2050, which focuses on improving economic cooperation and transport connectivity across West Africa.

The bridge is a part of the Praia-Dakar-Abidjan corridor, addressing a missing link.

ECOWAS Commission Transport director Chris Appiah said: “The 288 meter Bridge over the Cavally River is more than just an infrastructure project—it is a gateway to economic transformation for Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, and the entire West Afri-can region.

“This bridge which addresses a major missing link on the Dakar-Abidjan corri-dor is expected to improve trade, reduce transportation costs, and create jobs, directly contributing to regional integration and economic growth.”

ECOWAS project manager Ashoke Maliki provided the technical specifications of the bridge during the handover.

Designed as a two-lane, reinforced concrete cable-stay bridge, it is engineered to withstand the environmental challenges of the region.

The construction plans include establishing a temporary camp and organising material logistics through the Port of San Pedro.

A groundbreaking ceremony is set for November 2024.

Additionally, ECOWAS has discussed the project’s additional social initiatives, such as the development of sanitation facilities, local employment opportunities, and more.
