The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has awarded a contract to American construction company Granite for a road infrastructure project in Capitola, California, US.

This project has been funded by the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (SCCRTC) through Local Measure D-Highway Corridor funds, Senate Bill 1 grants, and additional SCCRTC-provided discretionary investments.

Granite has entered the project into its committed and awarded projects for the second quarter of this year.

Under the contract, worth approximately $72m, the company will be responsible for building supplementary lanes and bus-on-shoulder facilities on Highway 1 (Hwy 1) between Bay/Porter and State Park Drive in the state.

It will comprise the construction of concrete retaining walls, noise mitigation measures, storm drains, a bridge for bikers and pedestrians, and the restoration of a 165ft-long vehicle bridge with cycling and pedestrian facilities.

Granite plans to recycle 12,000 tons (t) of old asphalt and concrete into recycled aggregates and use 88,000t of subbase and base from its local aggregate and recycled aggregate operations.

In addition, the company’s Salinas Hot Plant will supply 24,000t of hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and 13,000t of rubberised HMA.

Granite's vice-president for Regional Operations Brent Fogg said: “Our team is thrilled to embark on these transformative projects to enhance the vital infrastructure along the Hwy 1 Corridor in Santa Cruz County, improving safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists alike.

“Our core values of excellence and safety will guide us to ensure minimal disruption to local traffic during construction. We eagerly anticipate the completion of these projects and the enhanced mobility they will provide our local community.”

The project is scheduled to commence next month and is anticipated to be finished in the third quarter of 2025.
