Bouygues' subsidiary Bâtiment Ile-de-France has been appointed to undertake energy refurbishment of the Joliot-Curie junior school in Palaiseau, France.

The town of Palaiseau selected the company for the project, valued at €7m ($7.65m).

The Joliot-Curie junior school, constructed in the 1960s and catering to 265 children, is set for a transformative renovation programme.

The global performance contract encompasses the design, which will be carried out in collaboration with enia architects, refurbishment works, and the maintenance of technical installations, ensuring the school's energy performance meets the client's requirements.

Specifically, the EnergieSprong approach has been chosen to meet the project's energy renovation standards.

The approach fosters the deployment of large-scale energy retrofits, cutting building energy consumption and generating part of the energy consumed.

The project will introduce innovative methods and processes, including off-site solutions to make the low-energy renovations more accessible.

Industrially produced timber-framed walls with integrated cladding and joinery and Paziaud supply-air windows will be incorporated into the project.

Meanwhile, the project will have single-flow controlled mechanical ventilation and photovoltaic panels to compensate for energy use.

Biosourced materials such as raw earth bricks and a wood-straw facade will also be used to minimise energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Construction is expected to commence in early July 2024, with the upgraded installations expected to be operational by the beginning of the school year in September 2025.
