Winvic Construction has marked the erection of the steel frame at the Bourn Quarter site in Cambridge, England, UK.

The event was commemorated with a signing ceremony attended by representatives from client Aitchison Developments and funder Savills Investment Management.

Representatives from each organisation signed a steel member that will be incorporated into Unit 16, the largest building on the 4.66ha site.

Winvic Construction Industrial, Distribution and Logistics managing director Danny Nelson said: “We were delighted to welcome partners from Bourn Quarter’s funders and developer, and they were delighted with our construction progress.

“The start of a steel frame erection programme is always an exciting milestone, and the signing of the steel member is a meaningful way to mark that progress. Entering the life sciences sector marks another significant enhancement to Winvic’s project portfolio.”

The Bourn Quarter project is a life sciences, research and development, production, and storage development, designed to accommodate a diverse range of businesses.

Winvic is progressing with the construction of nine facilities across six buildings, totalling 13,400m², as part of the second phase.

The development includes three detached industrial units, with sizes ranging from 1,655m² to 1,987m², and six facilities that will be built as adjoining pairs, varying from 639m² to 1,080m².

Each of the facilities at Bourn Quarter will feature a single-storey office space, sized between 174m² and 498m², which Winvic will fit out to category A standard.

The contract also includes the installation of all associated services and the construction of infrastructure such as roads, yards, and car parks.

The scheme is set to achieve a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method Excellent rating and an energy performance certificate A+ certification, aligning with the client's goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon in construction.

The completion of the facilities is expected by December 2024.

The development is anticipated to reach practical completion early next year, when Winvic finalises the planting scheme, which includes 351 trees, shrubs, and insect blocks.

Last month, Winvic Construction, serving as the main contractor for the Redcliff Quarter scheme in Bristol, England, celebrated the topping out of the mixed-use development.
