BMC to develop new athletic stadium in Mumbai

The project is currently in its tendering stage, with construction works expected to begin in January 2024.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of India is set to build a new athletic stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra, reported the Indian Express.

This proposed project is expected to be worth Rs360m.

The development will be built on a 24,682m² plot near Mulund’s Kalidas Natyagruh and include an eight-lane oval running track with 400m and 100m lanes, cages for shot put, discus throw, hammer throw, as well as pits for long jump, high jump, and javelin throw.

BMC Gardens deputy municipal commissioner Kishore Gandhi told the publication: “At present, there is no such facility in Mumbai. Therefore, we are trying to develop an athletic stadium for the public.”

Construction works on the project, which is now in its tendering stage, are scheduled to begin in January next year and be completed in 2025.

Furthermore, the BMC plans to build modular grandstands featuring a seating capacity of 566. Upon completion, the facility will be open for district and national-level tournaments and to the public for a fee.

An official source was quoted by the publication as saying: “Since we are trying for Olympic standards, we will appoint specialised agencies to build the grounds.”

Another source added: “This is the first-of-its-kind pilot project for the city. Depending on the response and on the availability of large open ground, the BMC would explore the possibility of developing a similar arena in the western suburbs as well.”
