BAM has secured an £800m ($1.05bn) contract to deliver the next phase of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) West project in the UK.
This next phase of the TRUWest project, set to be completed in 2028, is part of the £2bn TRUWest Alliance contract award.
The TRUWest project is a part of the TRU programme, which is transforming travel for passengers across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York.
This railway network spans 70 miles, including 23 stations, 29 level crossings, six miles of tunnels, and three miles of viaducts.
The TRUWest Alliance, comprising BAM, Arup, Amey, and Network Rail, will work collaboratively to execute the latest project phase.
BAM rail director Nissar Mohammed said: “BAM’s appointment to the next phase of the TRUWest project builds on over seven years of successful collaboration with our alliance partners, delivering more reliable, more accessible and greener travel across the North of England.
“Together with Network Rail and our alliance partners, we’ll continue to deliver engineering that will transform rail journeys and bring us one step closer to a net-zero future for the UK.”
The development encompasses a series of multidisciplinary railway upgrades between Huddersfield and Leeds.
The planned enhancements include upgrades to six stations, earthworks, and improvements to facilities and accessibility.
It also includes the construction of nine new bridges and a multispan viaduct.
This will enable the realignment and electrification of tracks, as well as an increase in the number of tracks to support faster, more frequent electric train services.
The signalling work along the 28-mile route, meanwhile, is set to increase reliability and reduce delays.
Moreover, the expansion of tracks from two to four between Huddersfield and Ravensthorpe will help to cut journey times and alleviate congestion.
The installation of overhead line equipment is part of the reduction of the UK's carbon footprint and improvement of air quality.
Last year, major upgrades commenced at Huddersfield Station as part of the TRU.
